It has been a while since I posted, but now I have more time than I have been used to and figured that I might try to get this going again. Two weeks before education commences at WSU and my professor friend wanted to go for a short hike before the chaos commences. I knew the perfect place: Mt Henry Lakes in Montana.

A drive deep into the Yaak area and a brief hike brought us to the lake. The length of the hike is about 1.5 miles, but, it is pretty much all uphill from the trailhead. In fact, it is 765 ft. of gain in that brief 1.5 miles. There are about three places that are great to stop at for a moment and look across the valley towards the mountains to the east.

I have hiked this trail twice now, and both times I found it to be highly isolated, with not another soul in sight. I did see signs of others having passed along the trail in the six weeks between trips, but I did not actually see them, which was nice. There is an excellent campsite about fifty yards or so from the lake. Other people have set up some seating and a fire pit. I believe that at some point in time I am going to hike up there and spend a night among the trees and wildlife.

Caribou Campground is very close to the Mt Henry Lakes trailhead. This trip tho, I took the opportunity to camp at a new campground that is being developed with motoadventurers, overlanders, and people seeking to find some great experiences in the outdoors in mind.

Yaak River Lagoon Resort is hosted by Tom and Raquel. I must admit that my friend and I did not take full advantage of everything they offered. This is because there was so much on hand to enjoy and we were slightly concerned about the hazards of fire in the outdoors currently. The campsite that we spent the night at had instant access to the dock from which we could have swam or launched kayaks and paddle boards from. Tom and Raquel provide a wide selection of life jackets and insist on their use. Other amenities included a fire pit with firewood and seating, an ax, a camp table, a barbecue with briquets and starter chimney, multiple places to set up a tent, and a kitchen area complete with propane stove where we were able to cook dinner and clean up afterwards. Bring your fishing gear as we saw fish turning all evening and nothing beats a fresh caught meal.

The campsite was pretty quiet, with the exception of a single gunshot about 3 am. I was unbothered by the noise of cars from the nearby highway. My friend did smell a skunk at some point in the early hours of the morning, but it did not approach close enough to be a nuisance. Tom seems to know the area quite well, and is even willing to show places to camp that are not at his resort, such as a spot on the road towards Mt. Baldy that sits near a creek. It seems to me that stopping to speak to Tom about the area would be worth the time, even if you do not plan on spending the evening there.

Troy, Montana 59935 (48°47’29.2″N 115°54’42.6″W). I will definitely take advantage of the amenities at the resort again when I go into the area to explore more. I want to thank Tom and Raquel for the great camping experience and I do want to also disclose that as we were their first customer, we were not charged for the stay. Even had we paid to camp there, it would have been a better experience than most places that I have paid for.
