Red Rock Falls, Glacier National Park, Montana

This weekends blog post about our short hike in Glacier National Park. Red Rock Falls can be accessed from the Swiftcurrent Trailhead. The trailhead is near the Many Glacier entrance to Glacier National Park. This entrance is found on MT Rte 3, which is off US Hwy 89, just south of Babb, Montana. The road is a little rough for a few miles, but it is manageable. Inside the park, the road is paved. The Swiftcurrent Motor Inn is at the end of the road and has a large parking lot. The trailhead is pretty easy to find in the northwest corner of the parking lot. Please be aware that this parking area appears like it will be inaccessible according to the National Parks website. I do not know what this means for the trails that can be accessed from this point.

Swiftcurrent Creek

The hike to the waterfall is a short 1.8 miles each way. There is not a lot of elevation gain so the hike can be considered fairly easy. The trail is a mix of dirt and rock with bridges over the creek and a few marshy areas. Trees line the majority of the trail, providing for a pleasant walk in the shade. Mountains loom up all around and many glaciers can be seen upon them. Keep a close eye to the rocky bits above. It is entirely plausible that you will spot a mountain goat wandering the harsh landscape above. Chipmunks, birds of various kinds (I am still not an ornithologist), and some deer that were catching an evening snack after the rains graced us with their presence.

Redrock Lake and the mountains behind it

While this was a great hike and the views were astounding, we left the park with the regret of only having this one day. There is so much to do in Glacier National Park. We drove Going to the Sun road, mesmerized by the many sights that were offered on our way to Logan Pass. With high mountain peaks, water running down mountainsides, and patches of snow everywhere, it was hard to take it all in and know where to focus our attention. I cannot wait for next year so I can plan a trip that involves much more time to check out all this park has to offer. Rather than just saying that this hike is well worth it, I would say that a trip to Glacier with plenty of time to enjoy it is well worth it. Give yourself at least a couple days, but the more time, the better.
