Towell Falls is pretty accessible for anyone that is willing to walk about 6.5 miles in total to see them. The roads are fine until you get to the final stretch of Jordan Knott Road. Heading east on WA Hwy 23 off of US Hwy 195, go about 12 miles to Wagner Rd. This turns into Bowen Rd. After about 5 miles, you connect with Davis Rd, just east of Revere. A little west of Revere is Jordan Knott Road. Head south on this road about 2.2 miles until you see the sign for Escure Ranch on Jordan Knott Road. Cross the cattle guard and pick your lines through the potholes. The last half mile or so gets more interesting due to the large rock that is free as well as embedded in the road. I saw a sedan at the trailhead, so the only thing stopping you from reaching it is your own comfort level. One other note: there is no cell service, so load your maps as hard copies so that you do not need the cell service to find your way out.

campsites at Towell Falls trailhead

Once you navigate the road into the trailhead, there is a rather nice recreation area waiting for you. There is one vault toilet, one covered picnic area, four campsites, and an equestrian area with an additional 2 camping spots. From what I saw, there appeared to be a place to corral your horses and a place to dispose of manure if you do not want to pack it out yourself. Each campsite had a fire pit with grate and a picnic table. There is no garbage service, so be prepared to pack out your own garbage.

trail to Towell Falls

The trail is a two track trail most all the way to the falls. There is very little elevation gain, making the trail fairly easy. You can take horses or mountain bikes on the trail. There are a few times that you walk amongst trees or high rock faces, so the sun will not be beating on you all the time, just most of it. Spring or fall is probably the best time for this hike if you do not want to carry a whole lot of water. I would also be wary of rattlesnakes as this seems perfect terrain for them. As this is ranch land, I did have to walk by several cows, but they seemed afraid of me and typically ran off before I got within 20 feet. This also means that you will have to avoid the occasional cow patty in the trail.
There will come a point where the two track will not get you to the waterfalls. I found a well worn cow path and followed that to a point where I could see the falls closely. I located one fall where the water was not flowing because of the creek level, but I also found a path down to the pool beneath the fall that was flowing. It took a little exploration to get the experience I was looking for, but I think it was worth the effort.

view of the Blue Mountains way off in the distance

Overall, I think it was worth visiting this waterfall. The hike was nice, altho there were more people out than I was expecting, given the isolation of the location and the temperatures. There were two groups of bird hunters that I encountered, as well as two groups of hikers. The campground does not seem to afford any privacy, but it is a way to stay at the trailhead and provide you with more time to explore the area. I did not explore the ranch as I did not realize that was an option and I was running out of daylight. I will likely make another venture out that way in order to check out the ranch as well. The feeling of being isolated and alone in cowboy country is pretty relaxing. I do enjoy the geography of this area, with its’ basalt mesas and grasslands. It is likely very pretty in the spring when the wildflowers are popping.
