Klemgard Park is a Whitman County park that is most easily accessed via Hamilton Hill Road off of US Hwy 195 between Pullman and Colfax, WA. There will be a sign indicating you need to turn right onto Upper Union Flat Rd. You can see the park roughly a mile down the road from there. The road can be very rough due to wash-boarding, but otherwise it is an alright road. There is no fee to use the park, but it does close at dusk.

Let’s watch some birds!

Klemgard Park can be broken down into four basic sections. The first thing you see is a large covered shelter with a large grill and tables. This large shelter can be reserved at least two weeks in advance of your event. There are some picnic tables floating about in the large grassy area. Vault toilets can be found somewhat near the large shelter.
Crossing the large grassy area leads to a playground with climbing and swinging equipment for children to play in. There are also horseshoe pits and a volleyball court in this section of the park.
Crossing the bridge over the creek leads to another area where there are three small covered shelters with tables and firepits and two more vault toilets. There is some grassy area here as well where you could play some catch or frisbee. On the way to the hiking trail is a small overlook where you can look at the creek.
The final feature of the park is a 3/4 mile hike. There are a few bridges over streams that are pretty neat to look at as well as a couple benches for resting. AllTrails gives the park a moderate rating, most likely because you are either going up or down hill without much of a flat area. This trail is not handicap accessible. It is a fine hike otherwise tho. Dogs are allowed, but they must be leashed in the entirety of the park.

Small shelters and grassy area

Klemgard Park is a nice little place to visit. No matter how large your group, you should be able to accommodate your party. With a playground for the kids, birds to watch, and means to cook, there is something for everyone. The park is open year round and is handicap accessible, except for the hiking trail. I enjoy spring and fall most for visiting this park for the varied colors.
