Steptoe Butte, Steptoe, WA

Steptoe Butte is about 30 miles north of Pullman, WA. The entrance to the state park is located on Hume Rd., which connects US Hwy 195 and WA Hwy 27. The road is rough, but I saw two Porsche’s at the summit, so with a little caution, anything can get up there. According the website, it appears that the road will be undergoing improvements in the spring of 2024, so that should help matters.

At the entrance proper there is a vault toilet as well as two day use areas. These areas have a total of seven uncovered tables and four grills for use on a first come, first serve basis. A Discover Pass is required to enter the park, which can be paid for in cash at the entrance, or there is a kiosk at the summit that takes credit cards. A Discover Pass is $10 per day or $30 per year. You can check the following site to locate a vendor near you if want to get the pass before heading out ( https://wdfw.wa.gov/licenses/dealers ).

Following the road as it corkscrews up the butte takes you in and out of the shade of many different types of trees, some of which are apple trees. There are historic apple orchards on the butte as well. There are two pullouts to take in the view at about 25% and 66% of the way up the road. The first offers a view to the north and the second to the west. On clear days, it is possible to see all the way to the Cascades to the west and all the mountains that are on the Idaho border to the east.
At the summit is another vault toilet and a few informational signs as well as a heritage marker for the site. It is hard to imagine, but at one point in time, there was a hotel on the summit! The view has been sort of spoiled by the intrusion of modern technology and all the arrays communication requires, but if you do not let that distract you, it really is hard to beat on a clear day. I recommend spring time, before the fire season starts, if you can plan a trip.

This park offers a great afternoon getaway for families or individuals looking to get out of town for a little bit. Nature, peace, and some epic views await anyone willing to take the time to travel up this narrow and winding road. For official information, please visit:
