I went to Winnemucca over the Labor Day weekend to visit my kid and father. Since I was going down there, I thought I would not be able to camp this weekend, which would have been a bit of a bummer (I have a pretty good streak for camping this summer). I did not want to camp up in Water Canyon, tho there are six sites available up there and it is not far from town. I checked into camping in town, and there was one facility, the Silver State RV Park, that hosted tent camping.

First off, I want to state the facility itself was fine. It had all the things that I wanted from a campground. The price was $30 for the night, which seemed a little steep, but the showers and bathrooms made it much more reasonable than a hotel room. The campsite had a decent table and a very large dirt area to set up my tent. The ground was pretty level and devoid of stones or other things that would make for a crappy stay or require more prep time. No campsite picturess this time because I set up and tore down in the dark and just did not take the time to get them.
Despite the happiness that my camp area brought, there were a few downfalls to this particular site, which perhaps the owners of the park can mitigate a little, but perhaps not. First and foremost is the fact that the facility is too close to the freeway and a lot of traffic noise can be heard throughout the evening. If you do not have to hear an alarm go off, earplugs could help in this situation. Building up a better fence between the mobile home park and the RV park could potentially help as well. The flow of traffic in and out of the park was quite annoying. It seems everyone owns a truck and they all want to compete to see whose is louder, so I was woken quite a few times by this as well.

Winnemucca has quite a few bars and casinos for adult entertainment. There is a bowling alley, a theater, a golf course, a swimming pool in the summer, and a lot of parks for family entertainment. Going up Water Canyon and hiking can be a nice way to spend a little bit of an afternoon, tho the road up to the parking area is dirt. It is passable to most vehicles despite this. The larger casinos have restaurants inside them, and there are many other restaurants scattered throughout the town. There are also two grocery stores and a Walmart if you want to prepare your own food.
Overall, the camping experience was worth having once, but next time I will camp up in Water Canyon or out at one of the reservoirs that are about an hour or so outside town. The ride there and back was filled with cold temperatures, high winds, and a fair bit of rain. Less than optimal riding conditions, but it was still more fun than driving and actually made the weekend an adventure.
