This will be a very brief post today. The Dean Creek Elk Viewing Area is a place that I enjoy stopping at every time that I go to visit my sister. About 3 miles east of Reedsport, OR on OR 38, it does mark a point where I am about ready to take a break from driving anyways. I have seen elk in the fields three out of the four times that I have stopped. If you really want to see the elk tho, I suggest bringing along a scope or binoculars. A large lens is going to be required to get them with a camera since they always seem to be several hundred yards from the viewing area. The interpretive center has a lot of really good information for children to learn about elk. Asides from elk, one can also see a variety of birds in the marshes and grasslands that compose this area.

The viewing area is easy to get to with any vehicle. The main challenge is the traffic that consists of a lot of motorhomes and RV’s that slow down the pace a little bit. It is a great place to get off the highway, relax and find some calm again before heading into town. Maybe you will get lucky and the herd will be close to the fence where you can really appreciate their size and beauty.
