This weekend I visited the Golden and Silver Falls State Natural Area. This hiking area has a vault toilet and a couple of picnic tables at the trailhead. It is accessible by most vehicles with a little care due to how narrow the road is and the depth of some of the potholes. The trailhead is a nice, shaded area and provides most of the relevant information on the notice board. Temperatures at the trailhead were about 10-15 degrees higher than down on the coast.

The hiking is fairly pleasant and for the most part not too difficult. There are salmonberry bushes at the time of that I did the hike, but a lot of them had already been picked. The berries are pleasant to eat and have a mild citrus flavor, at least according to my palette.

The falls themselves were not flowing very hard, but the drop is still pretty impressive. The falls that I visited first was Golden Falls. There is evidence of an impressive cliff calving event sometime in the past. For the more adventurous, there is plenty of rock available to be climbed and traversed. I did not take the hike to the top to see the falls from that perspective, but I think the trail is probably going to be a bit steeper as there is a much greater elevation gain.

Silver Falls flows over the top of the rock cliff. While there is more evidence of calving and slides, they seem to have not been quite as dramatic considering how far the rock is from the face. I liked the lighting of this falls better at the time that I was there.

Overall, I would recommend this hike if you have the time and need to get away from the coolness of the coast and find some warmth. Along the road to the trailhead, there is some public access to East Fork Millicoma River. There was a campground on the river as well as a separate day use area.
